There is an evil Shadow Dragon that exists between
dimensions, in the darkness and mystery that is the world of books. The dragon consumes knowledge that is not
being used. Books that lie dormant on
library shelves have known to turn to dust or at times – ash. This never takes place during the day when
the library is open and full of children.
The tendrils of the Shadow Dragon can only come into this realm at night
when no learning is taking place.
It is in this time of darkness that these inky, gloomy tendrils can be seen in the corner of your vision, haunting the stacks of books. The Shadow Dragon is strongest in libraries that are rarely used and is most powerful among books that are seldom read.
Your school has a new student, actually, two new students in Year 7 this year. Genevieve and Gerrard Smith. In the whispers of the staffroom, in the secret talking around Student Services and behind the closed door of the Principal’s office, a terrible tale is being told. You see, this is not Genevieve and Gerrard’s first school! Oh no, they come to us from far away but their reputation comes with them in sealed documents that only a few have read but many have speculated.
What is this great secret you may ask? Why it is something that none of you would believe if you looked at them. You would shake your head and call me a liar for even suggesting so. But then again, you see I overheard a conversation between the Principal and one of the Deputies. It seems that these two new students who come to us do so because they were expelled from their last school!
Now I hear the rumours flying left and right as to what they could have possibly done to get expelled! Again, you wouldn’t believe me if I told you but I will tell you anyway. Genevieve and Gerrard were expelled for burning down their primary school library! Not just once, but twice! Yes, they have been expelled twice from two different schools for the same reason.
They won’t say why they did it. They just shrug and tell people that they wouldn’t believe them even if they told the truth. All I know for sure is that in two schools, last year and the year before, when the Fire Department arrived they found among the ashes and cinders, two young children, twins from a far off land, covered in soot and stained from smoke, barely able to breathe from all the coughing.
So where are Genevieve and Gerrard now you ask? I’ll bet you want to talk to them and ask them why they did it, right? Well folks, that’s the problem. They aren’t here anymore. What I do know for a fact is that yesterday afternoon they hid in the library and when the building was locked up, they did something. Today, the library is still here, not burned down but Genevieve and Gerrard are nowhere to be seen. The security cameras show them going into the library, they show them entering the book stacks but then they just “disappear” and never came out again.
The two are missing and we don’t know what has happened to them. Well, the teacher’s don’t know but I do. You see, at lunch time yesterday, Gerrard gave me his diary and I read it last night. You are not going to believe the story you are about to hear but I swear it is all true and if we work together, we have some chance of getting these kids back.
Will you take up the challenge?
